Patek Philippe, a few months after the announcement that the iconic 5711 / 1A-010 in steel with blue dial would be out of production, unveils two new references, the 5711 / 1A-014 (steel) and the 5711 / 1300A- 001 (steel with baguette-cut diamonds). Both feature a dial in an unusual sunburst olive green color with engraved horizontal relief, gold applied hour markers with luminescent coating. In addition to the new dial color, two small differences can be seen from the blue model: a subtle white outline has been added to the date window and the date disc font is more bold. The dimensions of the stainless steel case with screw-down crown are confirmed: 40 millimeters in diameter by 8.3 millimeters thick (from 10 to 4 o’clock). The alternation of satin and polished finishes made by hand embellish the case, bezel and bracelet, also in steel with Nautilus folding clasp. We recall that the precursor of 5711 is the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3700/01 which “owes” its name to Jules Verne and to his work “Twenty thousand leagues under the sea”. Made of “poor” steel, the 3700 saw the light in 1976 thanks to the “clock architect” Gérald Genta. Challenging the aesthetic canons of the time, Genta proposed a timepiece with a case with two lateral protrusions to recall the portholes of ocean liners and an octagonal bezel with slightly rounded corners. In contrast to the diameters in vogue in the 1970s (from 33 to 37 millimeters), the 3700 case measured 42 millimeters in diameter and was 7.60 millimeters thick. This “courageous” choice earned him the nickname of “Jumbo“. The 3700, with a monocoque case resistant to water up to 120 meters, was equipped with the Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 920 (hours, minutes, date at 3), the result of the collaboration between JLC and Audemars Piguet.
